After the student newspaper, the Daily Northwestern, photographed and wrote about a student protest at an event for Jeff Sessions, former U.S. attorney general, the student journalists apologized:

Protestors should realize that the student news media usually agree with their goals and are excited to be there to document the history unfolding in front of them as the protestors demand social change. It does not make sense for protestors and professors to attack or criticize student journalists for doing journalism. Instead, they should thank the student journalists for caring about what they support and do, and for bringing their concerns to the larger audience.

A similar controversy erupted after Harvard University’s student newspaper reported about a protest and sought comment from ICE. Unlike at Northwestern, however, student editors at Harvard did not apologize. Instead, they explained the reason the newspaper covered the student protest:
